Well-wishers have raised over R6.3 million for a Michigan man who ran into a house fire to save his twin daughters.

Ray Lucas and his girlfriend Shi'Ann Brown had gone out to run errands, and when they returned home, they found their house on fire with their twin daughters trapped inside.

Brown said that his mother, who was watching the kids, managed to escape, but the 18-month old twins were still in the house. Without thinking twice, Lucas ran into the burning house.

“I was speechless. Action took over me. I ran into the house to get my babies. I'm looking at it as a father. I did anything that any other father would do or should do," the 23-year-old dad told CNN.

Stepping into the flames

Lucas explained that he did not see the firefighters arriving on time since the fire had spread to the basement, where the twins were sleeping.

Soon after entering the building, Lucas realised he could not see a thing but headed to the basement since he knew his way around the house.

He expressed feeling happy after finding his daughters responsive, and he grabbed them before making his way out of the house.

As soon as he handed the children to his mother, he realised his niece was also trapped on the second floor.

He went to the backyard and saw the young girl standing at the window, and he instructed her to jump before catching her.

"I was ecstatic we didn't lose anyone," he said.

Burns

However, his heroic act came at a cost as he sustained second and third-degree burns. He could also not see for days as his corneas were damaged due to smoke exposure.

The children, Malaysia and Milan, also sustained serious burns. After losing all their possession and being faced with expensive medical bills, his aunt started a GoFundMe page to help them rebuild their lives.

The KSh 4 million target has been surpassed as 12,000 people have raised over KSh 45 million so far.
