The supermodel got candid about some family problems that ultimately shaped her into the type of person that she is today! Gigi Hadid is on the cover Elle magazine’s March issue and in the interview she gave, the 23 year old model opened up about her mother, Yolanda’s battle with Lyme disease.

In fact, her brother Anwar and sister Bella also suffer from it, so it is safe to say that the disease shaped her upbringing quite a lot.

‘Growing up, having 3 of my family members sick made me really independent. My mom could not drive or even get out of bed some on days, so I took my brother to school or made lunch. But I also felt a lot of guilt for being the only person in the family who did not understand what they were going through. It is hard when your whole family is in pain, and you do not know what to do,’ Gigi confessed.

She went on to tell the magazine that ‘What’s been hardest for me is trying to find a way to be their hope and be a strength for them even with the disease that I cannot understand fully because I have not been through it.’

But while Gigi is the only one in the family not affected by Lyme disease, she has been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease instead, and her mother has apparently helped her manage it quite a lot.

The supermodel dished that she was prescribed medication most people start taking at 50 years old when she was only 17-18 and which can affect her health more if she takes it for too long.

That being said, her mom, Yolanda started looking into other options, such as ‘holistic treatments.’
