Since their establishment in 1926, the Blackhawks have won six Stanley Cup championships. They are part of the esteemed "Original Six" NHL teams, along with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers.

The team currently plays their home games at the United Center, which they share with the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to that, both teams played at the now-demolished Chicago Stadium.

Frederic McLaughlin was the original owner of the Blackhawks, and during his ownership, he was known for being hands-on, making numerous coaching changes. Under McLaughlin's ownership, the team won two Stanley Cup titles in 1934 and 1938. Following McLaughlin's death in 1944, the Norris family took over ownership. As owners of the Chicago Stadium and with stakes in several NHL teams, the Norris family had a vested interest.

Initially, the team struggled as the Norris-owned Detroit Red Wings received preferential treatment. However, after James E. Norris passed away in 1952, the Norris assets were divided among family members, and James D. Norris became the sole owner of the Blackhawks. Under his ownership, the team won another Stanley Cup in 1961.

After James D. Norris' death in 1966, the Wirtz family assumed ownership of the franchise. In 2007, Rocky Wirtz took control of the team and is credited with revitalizing the organization. The Blackhawks had faced a decline in fan interest and competitiveness, but under Wirtz's leadership, they won the Stanley Cup three times in 2010, 2013, and 2015.
